The r value of the batt measures the thermal resistance so the higher the r value the more effectively. Batt insulation is similar to roll insulation except that it comes precut in ready to install strips.

Putting up installation in walls is an easy job that most homeowners can do themselves. Batts are often easier and quicker to install because they greatly reduce the amount of cutting required.
